Letter to Parents Regarding Use of Threatening Language in School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are reaching out to ask for your help in discussing a serious matter with your student. The use of threatening language, whether in person or online, is a growing concern in schools today. Even if said in a joking manner, all threats made towards the school or its students must be taken seriously.
As of now, Tennessee law classifies any threats towards schools as a Class E felony, which carries significant consequences. Previously, such actions were considered a Class A misdemeanor, but recent changes reflect the increasing need to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
A Class E felony conviction can have long-lasting effects on a student's future, including:
- A permanent criminal record
- Limitations on college and career opportunities
- Restrictions on future employment
- Potential difficulty obtaining professional licenses or certifications
Handling these incidents requires a substantial amount of time and effort from both school administration and local law enforcement, who must thoroughly investigate each report to determine the severity. This process is not only time-consuming but also diverts attention from other important tasks.
We strongly encourage you to have an open conversation with your child about the seriousness of their words and actions. What might seem like a harmless comment can lead to major legal, academic, and personal repercussions that could affect their future.
Together, we can ensure a safe and productive environment for all students. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to keep our schools safe.
Sincerely,
Lewis County Schools
