Calm Coach Corner: Supporting Our Students' Emotional Well-Being
At Lewis County Schools, we are committed to supporting not only our students' academic success but also their emotional well-being. That’s where our Calm Coach comes in! The Calm Coach works with elementary students (with parent permission) to develop healthy coping strategies, manage emotions, and build resilience—helping them feel more confident and ready to learn.
Emotional wellness is essential for success in and out of the classroom. Here are two simple but powerful ways you can support your child’s emotional health at home:
1️⃣ Encourage Open Communication
Children need to feel heard and understood. Create a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment.
✅ Example: Instead of asking, "Did you have a good day?", try asking, "What was the best part of your day? What was something that challenged you?" This invites meaningful conversation and helps them process emotions.
2️⃣ Model Healthy Coping Mechanisms
Kids learn by watching the adults around them. Show them positive ways to handle stress and frustration.
✅ Example: If you're feeling overwhelmed, say, "I’m feeling stressed, so I’m going to take a few deep breaths and go for a short walk." This teaches them that it’s okay to acknowledge emotions and use healthy strategies to manage them.
By practicing these strategies, we can help our children develop emotional strength and confidence!
