Safety Improvements at Lewis County Schools

At Lewis County Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain a top priority. we have taken significant steps to enhance school security, ensuring a safer learning environment for everyone.

One of the most impactful changes is the addition of a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO) in each school building. These officers are not only trained law enforcement professionals but also mentors and role models for students. Their presence provides immediate response capabilities in emergencies while fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and our school community.

To further strengthen communication during day-to-day operations and emergency situations, multiple two-way radios have been provided to key staff members at both the school and district levels. These radios allow for instant, reliable communication across campuses, helping administrators, SROs, and other staff coordinate quickly and effectively.

In addition to locked exterior doors and key card entry systems, all exterior door entrance points (doors) at the Elementary, Intermediate, and High School have been outfitted with shatter-resistant window film. This added layer of protection is designed to slow down or prevent forced entry, giving law enforcement and school staff valuable time to respond in the event of an emergency.

Another key improvement is enhanced building security measures. All exterior doors remain locked throughout the school day, preventing unauthorized access. Additionally, exterior doors are now equipped with key card entry systems, allowing only approved staff members to enter. These measures ensure that each school remains a secure space where students can focus on learning without unnecessary disruptions.

We are proud of these advancements and remain committed to continually evaluating and strengthening our safety protocols. By working together—staff, students, parents, and local law enforcement—we can create an environment where every child feels safe and supported.
